25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall
Regarding the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, we began to think about und started prepairing "Art against Walls" in 2011.
This was preceded by our long-standing wish to create a project, in which a lot of people could take part inidividually.
Especially with regard to Berlin, a city that has become more and more popular among international people, we wanted to build a project free from marketing, being related strongly to the city and having a universal message.
It became clear quite fast that the history of Berlin, its division and the fall of the Wall, provided a symbolic and unique subject matter that we wanted to take up in order to set a mark and stand up for a peaceful living together. Thus, we remember the tradtion of the people who, during the time of the Wall, stood on the west side and wrote slogans or drew artworks on the Wall expressing their solidarity, their fight against oppression and their wish for peace and freedom.
The post-Wall generation in particular should have the opportunity to deal with a big historical moment with international impact that this generation did not experience itself.
Together with our partners and with over 50 schools of Berlin and Brandenburg we reached about 10.000 students representing the diversity of Berlin during this big event on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. In the context of interdisciplinary lessons or workshops lasting several days the students engaged in the topic more and more. They finished the project by painiting their own miniature wall pieces.
We took photographs of the submitted artworks, presenting them as coherent wall sections in our online gallery, ordered by classes and schools.
